Abbey Cottage celebrates 30 years in business with flowers
Three generations of the same family are celebrating the start of their 31st year of business at Abbey Cottage, New Abbey, and the tearoom is hosting a ‘Celebration with Flowers’ from Friday 12 April to Sunday 21st April 2013 to mark the occasion.
The Victorian cottage on Main Street, New Abbey, adjacent to Sweetheart Abbey, opened as a small tearoom at Easter 1983. It was immediately popular with local people and visitors to the area, and received listing in an Egon Ronay guide the following year. Since then, membership of the prestigious Tea Guild, home baking, table service and use of local ingredients have all contributed to Abbey Cottage receiving many accolades, including the Taste of Scotland Award, and Tea Council Tea Guild Awards of Excellence.
Over the years the premises have been extended, and the Tearoom can now accommodate 60 people, with additional tables outdoors overlooking the beautiful ruins of the Abbey.
Owner, Morag McKie says “We never imagined that what we started in the front room of the Cottage would become the business that we have today. Our menu has really expanded over the years with more local ingredients and items for people with special dietary requirements. We also have a gift shop, and just last year we added a small gallery. “And, back in 1983, I never expected to have my grand daughter working with me, it really IS a family business!”
