When young confectioner Frederick Belmont travelled from Switzerland to find his fortune he came to Harrogate accidentally - by catching the wrong train. He liked the place well enough to stay, married a local lass and opened the first Bettys. Today's unique Swiss/Yorkshire menu continues to reflect the heritage of the family business.
Taylors of Harrogate is a sister company, importing and blending all the wonderful teas served, and each of the tea rooms has a shop selling teas, coffees, speciality breads, cakes, patisserie and chocolates, all hand made at Bettys Craft Bakery.
Bettys Harrogate has recently undergone exciting changes and renovations and in the newly refurbished Verandah Cafe customers can enjoy being seated at tables with windows overlooking the Stray and colourful Montpellier Gardens whilst enjoying Bettys renowned afternoon teas and wonderful selection of specially selected & top quality teas! The downstairs Spindler Gallery affords its guests a collection of exquisite Marquetry scenes from the studio of Charles Spindler in Alsace, which was established in the late 1890's at the height of the Art Nouveau period. Bettys founder, Frederick Belmont discovered Spindler's work in the early 1930's and commissioned the studio to make Yorkshire scenes to hang in his tea rooms.
After extensive refurbishment, included restoring the beautiful 1920's plasterwork and oak fittings, The Imperial Room is now open to customers for the first time in 40 years. Book a table in The Imperial Room and enjoy a range of Afternoon Teas to the accompaniment of The Cafe's own pianist!
Bettys Harrogate's Montpellier Cafe Bar is reminiscent of the informal style of dining found in the cosmopolitan cities of Switzerland, Italy and France with a menu that changes through the day.
Displayed on the counter, where customers place their order, are a selection of classic pastries to be enjoyed in the morning; continental-style open sandwiches and filled rolls to tempt at lunchtime and stunning hand made cakes, tortes and patisserie that can be enjoyed throughout the day! Open also in the evening serving the full cafe menu, which can be savoured with wine or a pot of Bettys tea chosen from their extensive range of wonderful teas!
Bettys new shop, next door to the original, now offers their many customers an even more extensive range of food, all freshly made on the premises, alongside Bettys handmade breads, cakes and chocolate and of course a full range of Taylors of Harrogate's wonderful and world famous teas.
Keen cooks will be interested to learn that Bettys run hugely popular and informative Cookery courses at Bettys Cookery School, also in Harrogate. Visit www.bettyscookeryschool.co.uk for more information.
