Claridge's sets the standards by which other hotels are judged and any visit here is a proper occasion. Afternoon tea is served in the art deco foyer, beneath the fabulous Dale Chihuly silver-white light sculpture assembled from more than 800 hand-blown pieces, and also in the Reading Room restaurant with its leather columns, suede walls and plush banquettes.
Specialities of the house are the hotel's own tea blend, the delicious Claridge's Royal, and all of the Tregnothnan English Estate teas. Tregothnan is an ancient estate in Cornwall which was established in 1335 and is still owned today by the same family. Tregothnan has a history of botanical excellence and was, over 200 years ago, the first garden in Great Britain to grow both magnolias and camellias successfully and today has many rare species of trees and shrubs. Naturally, these tea crops are small and therefore unique and exclusive.
Guests can choose from a menu of over thirty different types of carefully selected teas from all over the world including, amongst more traditional teas, the glamorous Royal White-Silver Needles, which is only picked on two days of the year at dawn and processed entirely by hand.
