Black tea has many health and well-being benefits, which most of us are completely unaware of. In addition, some of us are confused by various ‘old wives tales’ associated with drinking tea.

The Tea Advisory Panel is a new, expert panel which can:

  • Provide independent and objective information about the latest health benefits regarding black tea
  • Answer all of your nutrition and hydration questions about black tea
  • Set the record straight on ‘science’ myths associated with black tea.

TAP Panel Biographies

Professor Jeya Henry

Professor Jeya Henry, is Head of Nutrition and Food Science, Oxford Brookes University, UK, and Visiting Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He initially trained as a Food technologist and subsequently read Nutrition at the prestigious London School of Hygiene & tropical medicine where he obtained his MSc & PhD in Nutrition. In February 2000, Professor Henry was appointed as a board member to the UK Food Standards Agency, a position he held till 2003. Professor Henry's major research interests are in, food –nutrient interactions, Obesity, Glycaemic index (GI), energy and protein metabolism & International Nutrition. His research group has been involved with providing GI testing of foods for Tesco's & several food companies worldwide.

He regularly acts as a consultant to WHO, UNICEF, FAO, Asian Development Bank and Global Food companies on aspects of food & Nutrition.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition. He has published over 170 papers, & edited 5 books. His most recent book (2007) being “Novel Food ingredients for weight control”. He is passionate about melding the disciplines of Food Technology & nutrition in order to create novel & traditional foods with enhanced health properties.

Dr Ann Walker

Dr Ann Walker PhD MNIMH MCPP RNutr Ann is part-time Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition in the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition at The University of Reading. She became interested in the medicinal uses of plants, when her husband, Alan, who had chronic fatigue syndrome, responded well to Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Whilst holding down her job, Ann retrained as a herbal practitioner in the 'western' mode, qualifying in 1994 and runs a Clinic on 2 days a week while continuing to publish clinical studies on nutrition and herbal medicine. She is the author of several books on human nutrition and many scientific papers. Ann and her husband run "Discovering Herbal Medicine" - a course aimed at enhancing public understanding and use of herbal medicine.

Lynne Garton, BSc (Hons), RD

Lynne is a keen and enthusiastic Nutritionist who has over 17 years experience in food, diet and health.

After qualifying from King's College, London with a degree in Nutrition and a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, Lynne practised as a clinical Dietitian both in the NHS and commercial environments. Passionate about communicating the role of good nutrition towards positive health and well-being, she now runs her own successful nutrition practice providing consultancy to the food industry, media, communication agencies and publication companies. Eager to ensure healthy eating fits in with today's busy and hectic lifestyles, Lynne also provides nutrition and well-being programmes to corporate clients.

Lynne's current work involves - Editor of Complete Nutrition magazine, the number one magazine of its kind to nutrition health professionals; appearances on TV and radio; educational articles for both health professionals and consumers; speaking at and chairing professional nutrition conferences.

Lynne's philosophy is to provide nutritional advice that is based on sound science, yet is practical and realistic for today's way of life. This approach, along with her experience and active membership of the British Dietetic Association, Health Professions Council, Nutrition Society and American Dietetic Association, makes Lynne a well respected figure in the field of nutrition.

Dr Catherine Hood

Dr Catherine Hood is an experienced presenter, health broadcaster and writer. She has recently presented Channel FIVE'S prime time series A Girls Guide to 21st Century Sex and regularly appears on The Wright Stuff on the Discovery Health Channel discussing all aspects of general medicine. Catherine has a weekly health page in the Sunday Mirror and has recently co-authored the Rough Guide ‘To me in my Twenties.'

Catherine continues to see patients in her capacity as a doctor, specialising particularly in women's health and psychosexual medicine. For seven years Catherine was the Clinical tutor in Communication at the University of Oxford where she lectured to the doctors of tomorrow and ran workshops to help them develop skills in talking to patients. She has taken these skills into the business world also helping top executives to become more effective leaders.

Dr Carrie Ruxton

Carrie Ruxton completed her degree in Dietetics at Queen Margaret University in 1990. An interest in how social class impacts on food choice and nutritional status led her to do a PhD on children’s eating habits. The results were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Now an established independent nutritionist, Carrie has published articles and reviews on diverse topics such as obesity, child nutrition, fish oils, tea, functional foods, sugar, sports nutrition, and healthy eating. She is a regular contributor to the media, including Zest magazine, Good Housekeeping, the Daily Express, Men's Health, Metro and BBC Online. Carrie is the nutrition expert on BBC3's 'Honey We're Killing the Kids' and had a regular diet slot over the summer on Radio Scotland's John Beattie show.

Carrie works with a range of European food and beverage clients on product development, PR, product launches, radio days, resource writing, and public affairs. She also consults to the NHS in Scotland on the subject of obesity, and is the author of a number of strategic reports. In 2008, she took up a public appointment on the Scottish Food Advisory Committee which advises the Scottish Food Standards Agency.

Dr Chris Steele MB, ChB

Dr Chris Steele is a general practitioner and one of the UK's foremost experts on smoking cessation, running 'Stop Smoking' courses for the NHS and Industry.

He has featured on ITV's 'This Morning' show, 'The Afternoon Show' for Granada TV, ITV's 'Tonight with Trevor McDonald' and on ITV's 'Celebrity Fit Club'. He has written books on medical issues and smoking, including 'Quitting Smoking' and 'Babies and Young Children'.

His recent health advisory work has been for the Security Service, MI5, Department of Health and NHS Direct.
