The Savoy

The Savoy

No other 5 star London hotel can rival the Savoy’s superlative location. On the banks of the River Thames, it is equidistant from the City of London, the world’s financial capital, as well as the luxury thoroughfares of Knightsbridge and Mayfair. Its prime position dominates an area of central London famed as a heritage sight and has recently undergone a major £100 million restoration programme and re opened again in October 2010 to the delight of both long standing and new guests.

Afternoon Tea is served in the beautifully decorated and legendary Thames Foyer situated in the heart of the hotel. Often described as “the vibrant heart of the hotel”, the Thames Foyer was built into the centre of the original 1889 hotel building when The Savoy was extended in 1904. In this elegant room, diners first rose to dance to the music played while they ate, thus inventing the dinner-dance. Amanent dance floor was later installed and the world-renowned Savoy bands made their debuts here as Tango teas and “thes dansant” became all the rage.

Savoy foyer for afternoon teaThe tradition of live music continues as the hotel’s resident pianist plays within the magnificent new winter garden gazebo during Afternoon Tea.The great glass cupola above you has restored the natural light which floodedinto the Thames Foyer in earlier times and its restoration, completed in 2010, was inspired by an original design found in the hotel’s archive.

Afternoon Tea at The Savoy is an enduring custom where guests can choose from an eclectic range of teas from around the world served with finger sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream & jam and a mouthwatering selection of cakes and pastries created by Martin Chiffers,  the hotel’s Executive Pastry Chef.
