King John's Hunting Lodge

King John's Hunting Lodge

King John's Hunting Lodge is the oldest house in this rare, unspoilt Wiltshire medieval village of Lacock. The main part of The Lodge which dates back to the 13th Century still has much of the original cruck beam structure, whilst the rear of the building was added to in Tudor times. King John (1167 - 1216), Lord of the Manor of Melksham, frequently indulged his passion for hunting in the surrounding forest and it is likely that he made regular visits to his Hunting Lodge.

Today, almost 900 years later, award winning owner, Margaret Vaughan has created The Tudor Tea Rooms and Restaurant and takes great pleasure in offering her many guests a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in which her guests enjoy fine home baked and traditional afternoon teas all served with fine quality and well brewed teas.

During the winter months The Tea Room boasts a roaring log fire and in the summer the lovely garden with pretty flowers attracts many visitors.

Included in an extensive Menu are the following:

HOMEMADE CRUMPETS:

Toasted with butter and fruity jams - and served with your choice of fine leaf tea.

CLASSIC "TEA" CAKE OR MARGARET'S CHEESE MUFFIN:

Both with lashings of butter - and served with your choice of fine leaf tea.

"LACOCK LUMBS":

A new addition to the menu, a "Lumb" is the Scottish name for a chimney and the old Scottish saying "Lang may your lumb reek" - meaning "long may your chimney smoke" was said for good luck and that even in hard times you would have sufficient coal for your fire! Margaret's "Lumbs" are toasted with cinnamon butter or old fashioned Gentlemans Relish! Truly delicious! Also served with your choice of fine leaf tea.

MARGARET'S CREAM TEA:

Enjoy a basket of warm scones, fruity jams and local organic Jersey or Clotted Cream served with your choice of fine leaf tea.

KING JOHN'S ROYAL TEA:

This hugely popular Afternoon Tea includes Smoked Salmon and Cucumber and Game Pate Sandwiches; a Selection of Warm Scones served with Fruity Jams and Local Organic Jersey or Clotted Cream followed by a Selection of Dainty Cakes. Your choice of fine leaf tea accompanies this Afternoon Tea.

Margaret's selection of homemade cakes and pastries From The Dresser should not be missed and gluten free options are also available.

Children, called Princes and Princesses, are catered for in The Tudor Tea Rooms with "Little Bites". Do ask for details!
